The Art of Freestyle

A rainbow of sneakers — high tops, low tops, metallic swishes, neon laces — bounce, tap and glide on the wooden floor. Dancers move freely in cut-off tanks and sweatpants with hand-sewn pockets; loose jeans and boom-box t-shirts; high socks and big hoop earrings.

On the Road: Montezuma Castle

If you've ever driven north on Interstate 17 toward Sedona or Flagstaff, you've likely noticed signs directing you toward Montezuma Castle National Monument near Camp Verde. I had seen them myself many times but never thought too much about it.

How to: Grill

Mmmm. That smell. You know the one. It’s the smell that hits you as it slowly wafts through the air on a warm afternoon; someone is grilling and you are instantly jealous.

Get Fresh: Marquee Virginity

I decided to take a step away from my usual on-campus adventures and write about the world outside of ASU, or really just five minutes away.

The Screaming Females Sleepover

SPM's Anthony Sandoval spent a night with the Screaming Females, a small rock band from a small town with a small frontwoman whose indie punk sound is anything from small.

Downtown Dispatch: Hanny's

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending a birthday dinner for State Press Magazine's own assistant editor, Erica Rodriguez. When Erica told me a few weeks ago that her dinner would be at Hanny's, I was really excited.

Rush hour on Main Street in Jerome. Photo by Chad Hays.

On the Road: America's Largest Ghost Town

My friend and fellow ASU student Jesse German sized up the town of Jerome pretty well in a Facebook status update over the summer: "in jerome right now.. what a crazy little one horse town!" A crazy little one-horse town, indeed. It's tough to describe Jerome. It's certainly tough to describe it to a group of college students and convince them it's worth the two-hour drive to get there from the Tempe campus.

The Sky is Not the Limit: ASU Maps Mars

Step into ASU Tempe's Moeur Building and step into another world. A team of researchers based out of ASU teamed up with NASA to build maps of Mars. After nearly a decade of research, THEMIS compiled over 60,000 visible light and infrared images of Mars surface.

Rodeos, Raves and Americana (Remix)

It was a Friday in August, and I was at a rodeo in Payson. The next night, I’d be at a themed rave in Warehouseville, Phoenix. I could make up some philosophical excuse — some deep, rhetorical explanation for why I chose to do these things, but really I just wanted to say, “I’m going to a rodeo and a rave this weekend.”

In the Huddle: ASU Rugby Toughens Up

The sun hit hard on a record-breaking day for temperatures on Saturday morning in Tempe. You would think most people would stay inside or find relief in the shade.

Downtown Dispatch: Hollywood Regency & Zinnias at Melrose

While driving around Phoenix last week, and after making a pit-stop at Urban Cookies for one of their caramel apple cupcakes, my boyfriend and I decided to finally venture out to Hollywood Regency, a vintage clothing store in Phoenix that is said to be closing sometime next January. After finishing up our cupcakes, and putting 724 W.
