Ten years ago this fall, Arizona State University’s downtown campus opened its doors for the first time and with it, the image - and residential composition - of downtown Phoenix’s core changed drastically. The city is making improvements to become more urban, and more friendly to a younger generation, but those changes are coming too slowly for local urban living advocates.

Moving into a new place comes coupled with stress. You need food, furniture and, you know, money. Making a space feel like home can be a daunting task that makes move-in day kind of a nightmare. (I mean, who doesn’t love carrying furniture and boxes upon boxes up flights of stairs in 115-degree weather?) A new apartment also means multiple trips to the the holy grail of home and dorm furnishings: Target.

You’re sitting on top of a grassy field, the wind gently blowing. The sky looks like someone put a couple drops of blue food coloring in it. You lay your head on your backpack and look around. In the distance, there’s a large land mass, only accessible by boat. All around you is ocean. Ocean for miles and miles and miles. You feel like you’re the only person left on the planet, and yet, this thought doesn’t scare you. Instead, a sense of peace and calm fills your body. You are free. Free of emails, exams, classes. You are simply free.
