Skate After School helps elementary school kids grow, stay active

When Tim Ward first came to the Care Partnership in Mesa, he saw an opportunity to make a difference. Ward began bringing in donated skateboards for the children there to play around with. After seeing the positive results, Ward continued to bring in boards and volunteer his time, leading to the creation of Skate After School, a small nonprofit organization that holds after-school programs for children at several different schools and locations around Phoenix. Although Ward says he didn't initially intend for it to become a program, the reception from the kids and their communities has been positive. Ward and his other volunteers say they aren't looking to create a new generation of skateboarders, but to just have a positive influence on the kids and provide them with something fun to do after the school day is over. Skateboards, parts and safety equipment can be donated to Skate After School at Cowtown Skateboards in Tempe.

SP Weekly - Concussion Detection

ASU's football program has partnered with Riddell and Translational Genomics Research Institute(TGen), in a study that aims to develop improved ways of detecting and treating concussions. The goal of ASU, Riddell and TGen's study is to find a way to use the biomarkers found in blood, urine, and saliva to detect concussions before they happen and provide information that will lead to better treatment. The study utilizes the Riddell Sideline Response System, which is located inside of the players helmets, after every game and practice. The study is recording the number of hits to the players head, as well as where and how hard they were hit. The researchers collect samples from the players each week so they can see how their molecular information changes. Everyone involved in the collaborative study hope that the results from this study can make the popular sport a bit safer for the players.

Bodega 420: Fresh Food and Local Spirit

Produced by Jessie Wardardski | Statepressmagazine.com -- "Bodega 420 is about community. The connectivity is made evident the moment you set eyes on the welcoming building and the area around it. There is a makeshift swing hanging from a tree in the front yard and a porch that looks well broken in from its visitors. Like many businesses on Roosevelt, Bodega is located in a house, and there is a very comforting vibe that makes you feel right at home," writes SPM writer Marilyn Napier.
