A man was fatally shot in downtown Phoenix near Second Street and McKinley Street early Sunday morning, a few blocks north of the Downtown Phoenix campus.

Officers responded to the shooting around 12:30 a.m. and found a man with a gunshot wound, according to an email statement from the Phoenix Police Department. The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition where he died, the statement said.

No ASU students were involved, a University spokesperson said in a written statement.

"Due to the nature of the event and proximity to campus a LiveSafe was issued as a precaution," the spokesperson said in the statement.

The suspect allegedly fled the scene following the incident and the investigation is ongoing.
