Men's Basketball offseason roster check-in: How the Sun Devils are repairing a sinking ship

With many key departures, Hurley and Co. will heavily rely on mid-major transfers to produce

ASU freshman guard Joson Sanon (3) shoots for a three-pointer on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025, at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe. ASU lost 80-65.

With the college basketball season in offseason mode, head coach Bobby Hurley and the Sun Devils are in the middle of a complete roster reconstruction. ASU took a major hit to the transfer portal, losing freshmen stars Jayden Quaintance and Joson Sanon, both of whom are ranked in the top 25 of 247Sports' transfer rankings. With only one scholarship player returning, freshman guard Trevor Best, Hurley is hitting the transfer portal market hard.

Who's on the way in? (Transfers)

Marcus Adams Jr. - CSU Northridge

Adams Jr. struggled to find a fit even before stepping on a college court. The sophomore forward initially enrolled at Kansas before transferring a month later to Gonzaga. A month later, he decommitted and transferred to BYU, where he would appear in just one game. When the season ended, he transferred to CSU Northridge, where he found his fit, averaging 16.1 points per game and landing a spot on the All-Big West Second Team.

Now, he finds himself in Tempe. He sits as the highest-rated transfer for the Sun Devils this year, per 247Sports, and brings a lot to the table. He's a versatile big who can work around the paint and is also great on the catch-and-shoot from behind the arc. Only having played one full season, there's a lot of upside to this pickup.

Adante' Holiman - Georgia Southern

The junior guard has also moved around a lot throughout his career, with ASU being his fourth school in four years. A vastly improved player last year, Holiman averaged 16.9 points a game, more than doubling his output in that category the year before. Named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team, Holiman is a strong finisher around the rim and loves to shoot the three, doing it well at 38.6% last season.

Allen Mukeba - Oakland

A little undersized at 6-foot-6-inches, Mukeba makes up for it with strength and effort. The size would be worrying, especially as he moves to the Big 12, but he held his own in games against power conference teams last year.

The senior forward had 19 points and seven rebounds against No. 1 Kansas and had 17 points and six rebounds against No. 23 Arkansas, outplaying two dominant, much taller bigs. The Horizon All-League Second Teamer could be a matchup nightmare with the speed he has to blow right by bigger players, while holding his own on the defensive and rebounding end.

Moe Odum - Pepperdine

The first transfer to commit in the 2025 class, Odum, seems like the Mason replacement. Across the board, their numbers are very similar, except for one: assists. Odum is an excellent passer, averaging 7.5 per game, the fourth highest rate in the country.

Pepperdine is known to be a bottom dweller in the West Coast Conference, but even though the regular season went poorly, Odum led the Waves to the WCC semifinal game. Odum averaged 21.5 points and 9.3 assists in the four games, including a 31-point outing and three double-doubles across the stretch.

Santiago Trouet - San Diego

The sophomore forward is a three-level scorer who averaged 8.7 points and 6.8 rebounds last season, but will likely have to get his efficiencies up if he wants to carve out a role by conference play.

Bryce Ford - Toledo

The Scottsdale native comes home after averaging 7.1 points and 2.8 rebounds in his sophomore season at Toledo.

The Freshmen (and others)

In addition to the incoming transfers, Hurley has taken on a few high school recruits to help round out the rotation, specifically in the frontcourt. While it's hard to redo the recruiting success they had last year, this small bunch, in number, not in size, still provides a lot of upside.

Their latest pickup on the recruiting trail came from the new Sun Devil hotspot that is Word of God Christian Academy. It's the former school of Quaintance and Best, and now brings in four-star Marcus Jackson. The 6-foot-8-inch explosive big man is the No. 9 center in the 2025 class. He was formerly committed to Maryland, but shortly after pledging, Jackson decommitted.

To wrap up the class, ASU grabbed two other bigs in three-star Kash Polk and four-star Jaion Pitt. In addition,  Hurley picked up Triton College guard Vijay Wallace and international player Andrija Grbović
