Hide-and-seek at ASU: Top 5 places to hide away on campus

Where to go around Tempe when you just need a minute to yourself

Places around ASU's Tempe Campus to hide on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024 in Tempe.

Every student gets to a point, whether it's finals week or just a bad day, where you may not be able to leave campus. Sometimes, you just need a second not to be surrounded by college students.

With places like Hayden Library and the Memorial Union, finding a quiet place where students don't roam might seem impossible. If you need a place to hide, don't tell them about these hidden spots.

Here's a guide to some places around ASU where students seldom roam:

5. Want to feel like Rory Gilmore? The courtyard behind Interdisciplinary A Building

This courtyard has small walkways, tables and tons of trees, perfect for the outdoor-study fanatic. It is sparsely used, though students may walk through to get to the Farmer Education Building from Memorial Union. The tables and grassy patches are a great way to hide from everyone you know even just for a moment.

Whether you just want to rot on your phone or find peace in a quiet place, this is a spot where no one will give you a second glance.

4. Hanging or hammock-ing? Engineering Center courtyards

Within the many wings of the Engineering Center buildings are courtyards with tables, lawn chairs and even some hammocks to lounge in. This "engineered" hideaway is hard to find unless you're looking for your class or impossibly lost.

3. Pop a squat: Benches between the Bateman Physical Sciences Center buildings

It might seem odd, but the walkways between Wexler and the Physical Sciences Center buildings have long concrete benches that are surprisingly comfortable. It's a quiet, secluded spot on campus where you could go to rest or maybe watch a movie between classes.

Near those benches are plenty of stairs going to the basement of the buildings if you want to hide away from the world.

2. Connect with nature: Diane and Bruce Halle Skyspace Garden

Although there are plenty of ways to connect with nature on campus, such as the Secret Garden and atriums galore, this garden close to the Skyspace is hardly used by students and is a great way to finally listen to your mom and touch some grass.

Still in the range of ASU Wi-Fi, the Skyspace Garden is a perfect hiding spot with butterflies and trees alike.

1. High place views: The roof of The Student Services Building

Whether you genuinely need to win a game of hide-and-seek or take a moment to yourself, the student services roof is the place. With tables and open entrances for students, it’s a great way to see the overarching view and hide from it all.

All it takes is an elevator ride up the Student Services Building to reach this sanctuary of separation from bustling campus life.
