ASU will host the 2025 Ice Breaker Tournament in Mullett Arena on Oct. 10 and 11 to start next season.
The Ice Breaker Tournament launched in 1997 to start each season. Next year's edition will be the first with ASU competing or hosting. The Sun Devils will welcome Alaska, Notre Dame and Quinnipiac to Tempe.
"We're excited to host one of college hockey's most premier annual tournaments at our very own Mullett Arena in the heart of the NOVUS Innovation Corridor in 2025," said ASU athletic director Graham Rossini in a press release. "The Ice Breaker Tournament is an excellent experience for ASU fans and students to enjoy elite competition on the ice while increasing the footprint of Arizona State hockey on a national scale."
Before playing host, ASU will get a taste of tournament hockey during the NCHC tournament at the end of the 2024 season. The last time ASU played a tournament game was the 2018-19 season in the program's only NCAA Tournament appearance.
ASU head coach Greg Powers said he's excited about the tournament and competition.
"This is a tremendous event," said Powers in an interview with Sun Devil Athletics. "It's a privilege to host this event and to invite three elite programs in one weekend to Tempe is icing on the cake. Hockey fans in the desert will see college hockey at the highest level."
The 2025 Ice Breaker Tournament is likely to be competitive with the 2023 NCAA champion Quinnipiac playing. Powers' team will be put to the test on home ice against some of college hockey's best programs.
"Four of the top programs in the country competing in one of the best buildings in college hockey will be a great way to kick off the 2025-26 season," said College Hockey Inc. Executive Director Sean Hogan in the press release.
Tickets will go on sale at the end of the 2024-25 season. Tickets for the general public will be available in the summer of 2025.
