The Arizona State University Police Department — along with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office — is facing a compliance review from the U.S. Department of Justice after officers allegedly removed protester's hijabs during campus encampments in April, according to ABC15 Arizona.
The investigation aims to determine if there were any civil rights violations. In response to the investigation, ASU affirmed its support for ASU Police actions.
"ASU has been notified of the review by the DOJ," an ASU spokesperson said in an email. "We believe that ASU Police took actions that night consistent with recognized law enforcement practices. The university will cooperate fully with the review."
MCSO also commented on the DOJ's actions.
"MCSO is fully cooperating with the Department of Justice and confident that we have not violated anyone's civil rights related to this incident," Sergeant Monica Bretado said in an email.
