Clery Report: Crime across ASU increased in 2021 from 2020

The University reported 1,517 crimes in 2021 from across its four main campuses in the Valley

The number of non-drug and non-alcohol-related crimes reported from all four main ASU campuses increased in 2021 from 2020, according to ASU's 2022 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, published Friday.

The report, which is mandated by the Clery Act, reported that the recorded crimes that took place on ASU's four main campuses in 2021 increased to 1,517 from about 1,450 in 2020

There was one hate crime reported on the Tempe campus in 2021, the first hate crime reported in multiple years.

All non-drug and non-alcohol-related crimes made up 151 of the crimes, and 1,366 crimes reported were drug or alcohol-related. 

On the Tempe campus, 1,273 crimes were reported, an increase of 30 from 2020, when 1,243 crimes were reported on campus. 

According to the report, there were 152 crimes reported on the Downtown Phoenix campus, 40 on the Polytechnic campus and 52 on the West campus.

"In this time of social justice transformation, we recognize the importance our department plays in promoting an environment that enhances trust within the ASU community through communication, listening, respect, transparency, and procedural justice, which are the pillars of our department and critical to everyone's success," said Michael Thompson, ASU Police Department chief of police in the introduction of the report.

Violent crimes

There was an increase in reports of rape from 17 in 2020 to 24 in 2021 on the Tempe campus, not including reports of statutory rape.

There were 12 reports of aggravated assault, an increase from nine in 2020. Of the 12 reports, seven were from the Tempe campus, three from the Downtown Phoenix campus and two from the West campus. There are no reports of aggravated assault from the Polytechnic campus.

There were 14 reports of fondling across the four main campuses, an increase of 10 from 2020. There were 12 incidents on the Tempe campus, one on the Downtown Phoenix campus and one on the Polytechnic campus. 

The two reports of arson in 2021 were from the Tempe campus. 

There were no reports of manslaughter or murder in 2021, the same as the last five years. 

Theft

There were eight robberies reported in 2021, six on the Tempe campus, one on the Downtown Phoenix campus and one on the Polytechnic campus. In 2020, there was only one robbery reported, and it was on the Tempe campus. 

There were 26 burglaries on the Tempe campus, five on the Downtown Phoenix campus and three on the Polytechnic campus. 

There were 15 reports of motor vehicle theft in 2021, all on the Tempe campus. There were 17 reports of motor vehicle theft in 2020.

Domestic violence, dating violence and stalking

Crime reports of domestic violence, dating violence and stalking on all four main campuses increased from 17 in 2020 to 38 reports in 2021. 

There were four reports of domestic violence on the Downtown Phoenix campus, two reports on the Tempe campus and one on the West campus.

There were six reports of dating violence on the Tempe campus, three on the Downtown Phoenix campus and two on the West campus. 

There was a total of 20 reported cases of stalking, 19 on the Tempe campus and one on the Downtown Phoenix campus. 

Drugs, alcohol and weapons

There was a total of 58 drug arrests on all four main campuses. Of the 58, 42 arrests took place on the Tempe campus, 13 on the Downtown Phoenix campus, two on the Polytechnic campus and one on the West campus. 

There was a total of 199 drug referrals in 2021 among the four campuses; 150 took place on the Tempe campus, 35 on the Downtown Phoenix campus, nine on the Polytechnic campus and five took place on the West campus. 

There were 60 alcohol arrests, and all 60 took place on the Tempe campus. 

Of the total 1,049 alcohol referrals on all four campuses, 899 were from the Tempe campus, 85 from the Downtown Phoenix campus, 41 from the West campus and 24 from the Polytechnic campus. 

There was only one weapons arrest in 2021 on the Tempe campus, a decrease from the eight weapons arrests from all four main campuses in 2020. 

There were no weapons referrals in 2021. 

Other notable statistics 

ASU's Barrett and O'Connor Washington Center campus in Washington, D.C. reported no crimes, as did the California Center campus, which relocated from Santa Monica to the newly opened Los Angeles campus.

The ASU School of Social Work in Tucson reported no crimes for the third year in a row. The Lake Havasu campus also reported no crimes but reported one alcohol referral in 2021.
