Despite six individual top-three finishes, No. 16 ASU gymnastics lost to No. 13 Cal 197.100 to 196.650 on Sunday in Berkeley, California.
No Sun Devils placed in the top three on bars after multiple gymnasts were unable to land cleanly, leading the team to score a season-low 49.075 in the event.
ASU and Cal tied on vault, with each team scoring a 49.200. Three Cal gymnasts scored a 9.850 or higher in the event, including a team-high 9.900 from sophomore Nevaeh DeSouza.
ASU freshman Anaya Smith scored a career-high and meet-high 9.925 on vault. Sophomore Hannah Scharf took third in the event, scoring a 9.875. Freshman Emily White tied her career-high with a 9.825.
Three Cal gymnasts scored a 9.900 or above on bars. Freshman Andi Li scored a meet-high 9.925. DeSouza and senior Kyana George each scored a 9.900.
Cal scored a season-high 49.250 on beam. DeSouza’s 9.900 on beam placed second in the meet behind ASU freshman Sarah Clark’s meet-high and career-high 9.950. Cal junior Milan Clausi and Li both scored 9.850.
Despite Clark’s performance on beam, ASU could not overcome Cal's lead. White scored a 9.850 in the event, tying her career-high. Junior Megan Thompson scored a 9.800 for the Sun Devils.
Scharf fell on beam twice, once during her routine and the other time during her dismount, leading her to score a 9.025.
ASU and Cal also tied on floor, with each team scoring a 49.325. Senior Cairo Leonard-Baker and Scharf each scored a 9.900 in the event for ASU, tying for second place in the meet. Sophomore Juliette Boyer scored a season-high of 9.875.
George’s 9.950 on floor, along with DeSouza’s 9.900, helped secure Cal’s first team score above 197.000 this year.
DeSouza’s 39.600 total points earned her first place in the all-around. Scharf, ASU’s only all-around competitor, scored a 38.675.
ASU will travel to face Washington in its next meet on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. MST.
