In its first team dual meet since Jan. 8, No. 10 ASU beat Wyoming 29-15 remaining undefeated.
ASU (3-0) started off on the wrong foot, with redshirt junior Austin Clayton getting pinned by Wyoming redshirt junior Hayden Hastings in the 174-pound matchup. Redshirt senior Cade Belshay was then defeated by Wyoming junior Tate Samuelson in the 184-pound matchup to give Wyoming a 9-0 lead early.
ASU bounced back with authority, however. Senior Kordell Norfleet and redshirt freshman Cohlton Schultz gave ASU a 12-9 lead with back-to-back pins at the 197-pound and heavyweight class, respectively.
Redshirt junior Brandon Courtney and redshirt senior Cory Crooks earned major decisions at the 125- and 149-pound class, respectively. Redshirt junior Michael McGee and redshirt senior and Anthony Valencia also earned a victory. Graduate student Peter Lipari also beat his opponent, culminating a 14 point victory.
After the first two matches, Wyoming only earned more points because of an ASU forfeit at the 157-pound class.
Similar to ASU's first two matches, extra individual matches followed the dual in order to help wrestlers reach the minimum number of matches needed for NCAA Tournament qualification.
The extra matches were highlighted by redshirt freshman Julian Chlebove recording two victories at the 141-pound class and redshirt junior Brandon Courtney notching his second victory of the day.
Redshirt junior Chad Porter recorded a victory at the heavyweight level, and freshman Jesse Vasquez pinned his opponent at 149 pounds to move to 2-0 on the season.
Next up for ASU is a home Pac-12 matchup against Cal Poly (2-2) on Feb. 11 at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe. CSU Bakersfield was scheduled to join the two teams for a tri-meet, but CSU wrestling operations have been paused as a result of university health and safety protocols.
