Lacuna Kava Bar, which is a short walk from ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus, offers a variety of kava and kratom drinks.
Kava and kratom are indigenous to the Pacific Islands and Southeast Asia and are popular for their quick to notice effects. Lacuna Kava Bar's owner, Chase Brendle, describes it as a "very cool, social beverage," which he tries to channel into the atmosphere of his cafe.
While most cafes are for coffee and work, Lacuna Kava Bar is the "best of both worlds," Brendle said.
"You can come in, sit on our couches, or we have a really large seating area which is our stage that has cushions and pillows all over it," Brendle said. "You can cozy in there and dive into your laptop and study or get some work done, and you can do it with a group of friends if you're working on a project and you don't have to worry about the volume."
Brendle describes his kava cafe as "oasis" and "community" not being able to choose between the two while they pride themselves in being a part of the small local business community of Phoenix.
