Junior Richard Bohus celebrates after taking first in the men's 100-yard backstroke on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, for a new ASU record of 46.74 seonds.

Despite placing below Stanford, USC, Cal and Arizona, ASU men's swim and dive set some team records at the Pac-12 Championships.

The tournament, which began on March 2, started with the 200 medley relay. The Sun Devils' time of 1:25:35 broke the team record set against Arizona on Feb. 6; however, it was not good enough to succeed in the tournament, placing ASU at fifth overall.

The team also finished fifth in the 800-yard freestyle relay despite its time of 6:19:31 breaking a record established in 2000.

On the second day of the tournament, ASU didn’t crack the top ten in an event until the 50 freestlye prelim in which sophomore Patrick Park got 10th place in the event and qualified for the B finals. In this race, he finished 12th with a time of 19.96 seconds.

ASU later finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:18:86).

Two ASU divers placed in the top-ten in the 1-meter diving prelims and finals. Sophomore Heikki Makikallio took sixth place in the prelims with a score of 336 and his teammate, sophomore David Hoffer, got seventh with 331.25. In the finals, Makikallio finished fourth place with 378.55 and Hoffer got seventh with a score of 319.30.

On March 4, ASU broke several of their records. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Lorenz got sixth place in the event with his record breaking time of 53.10 seconds. The team wasn’t done there — in the 100-yard backstroke, Bohus  set a new record with 46.49 seconds, finishing in fourth.

Duskinas also had a good performance as well in the 100-meter butterfly as he got fourth place with a time of 46.13. For the final event on day three, ASU competed in the 400-yard medley relay. It finished in fifth place (3:08.78).

On the diving board, Hoffer continued his strong performance. He got eighth place in the 3-meter dive (329.10).

The Pac-12 tournament concluded on March 5. In each prelim event, ASU placed someone in the top ten, qualifying them for the finals in that competition. Four team records were broken in these rounds.

In the 1650-yard freestyle finals, senior Juan Tolosa got fifth place with a time of 14:55.55, setting an ASU record. Perry broke the 200-yard record in the prelims with a time of 1:42:00 before breaking it again in the finals, finishing 0.16 seconds quicker.

The final record breaking performance was by the ASU 400-yard freestyle relay. The team qualified for the NCAAs A Finals, breaking the school's record with a time of 2:54:84.

Bohus got fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (43.23), Lorenz got third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.32) and Park got seventh in the 200-yard butterfly (1:44.45).

On this day, Makikallio and Hoffer swapped roles. Hoffer finished ninth in the prelims and Makikallio got third with a score of 364.05.

The team was unable to place high in the tournament, but it was an individually successful day in school history.
