Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday:
A 35-year-old Tempe man was arrested May 19 on the 700 block of North Mill Avenue on suspicion of failure to register as a sex offender, failure to carry ID as a sex offender, failure to produce ID and resisting police, according to a police report.
Officers contacted the man and his friend, the driver of a black 2001 Ford Focus that officers said appeared suspicious, police reported.
The man and his friend exited the vehicle and the man began to walk away from officers, police reported.
The man then took off running, attempting to escape through an apartment complex in close proximity to their location, according to the report. An officer was injured running in pursuit of the man and was unable to catch up, according to the report.
The man was located on a Blue Orbit Bus after a Tempe citizen advised Tempe police that a man matching his description boarded the bus, police reported.
The man identified himself explaining he didn’t have his identification with him, according to the report.
A records check revealed the man was a sex offender after the officer verified the photo on the ID was a match for the man he had detained, police reported.
He later explained that he was in Tempe to visit his son for his birthday and acknowledged that he knew he was supposed to have his ID on him, police reported.
The man also said that the sex offender registry address on his ID should be his mother’s in St. John’s and that the address on his ID is wrong, according to the report.
The man said that he lives in St. John’s, according to the report.
When asked why he ran from the officers, he said he didn’t have time for it and he had to get to work, according to the report.
The officer contacted a detective working on a case involving the man, police reported.
The detective contacted the local police agency in St. John’s confirm with the man’s mother that he doesn’t live there and the sex offender registry has the address in St. John’s listed as the address for his registration, not Tempe, according to the report.
The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, police reported.
