ASU swim and dive's Mara Aiacoboae places fourth in final round of platform dive at NCAA Championships

ASU swim and dive sent seven women to the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, but freshman diver Mara Aiacoboae was the only one to reach an event final, ultimately placing fourth in the final round of the platform dive.

Aiacoboae competed in the platform, 3-meter and 1-meter dives at the NCAA Championships.

She placed fourth in the preliminary round of the platform dive, her signature event, with a score of 316.20 over her first six dives.

In the event final, Aiacoboae added held onto fourth place with another 313.50 on her next six dives.

She placed 46th out of 49 total divers in the women's 3-meter with a score of 262.80 over her six dives.

The 1-meter was much of the same for her as she placed 36th out of 45 with a total score of 268.40.

Senior Hailey Casper also represented ASU on the diving board in her last meet as a Sun Devil.

In her last NCAAs, Casper competed in her signature event, the 3-meter dive.

She placed 33rd out of 49 divers with a score of 295.20.

Unfortunately, this was Casper's last dive as a Sun Devil because the final round only consists of divers with the top 16 scores. However, she will now focus on diving for her country Canada in international competition.

ASU's 200 medley relay team of sophomore Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, freshman Jorie Caneta, junior Marina Spadoni and senior Melanie Busch barely missed the 16-team cut for the event final.

The relay team finished in 19th place with a time of 1:37.91, which was just slower than its NCAA-qualifying time of 1:37.53.

Sophomore Kat Simonovic and Jonsdottir were the only two ASU women to compete in individual events. Jonsdottir competed in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke events while Simonovic competed in the 500 freestyle race.

However, neither made the final round of their respective events.

Sporting a qualifying time of 22.70 in the 50 freestyle, Jonsdottir clocked in at 23.07 for 54th place. In the 100 backstroke, she swam a 53.03, good enough for 28th place and barely missing her qualifying time of 52.96 at the Pac-12 Championships.

Meanwhile, Simonovic placed 53rd out of 55 swimmers in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:51.62, which was slower than her qualifying time of 4:47.06.

ASU men's swimmer Tadas Duskinas and divers David Hoffer and Hunter Atha will compete in the men's NCAA Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, from March 26-28.
