The ASU women's swimming team, as well as both diving teams competed in the first wave of the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Washington, from Feb. 25-28.
The diving was separate, but the ASU women's swimming team ended up in seventh place with 610 total points.
In addition, the Sun Devils had multiple season-bests and a few record-book performances from standout swimmers.
Swimming:
ASU's 200 medley relay "A" team earned a spot in the school record books on Wednesday.
The team of sophomore Ingibjorg Jonsdottir, freshman Jorie Caneta, junior Marina Spadoni and senior anchor Melanie Busch posted a 1.37.53 time that was good for fourth place overall and second-best in school history—the time also clinched a berth to the NCAA Championships.
In addition, seven of eight swimmers who competed in the 200 medley relay on the "A" or "B" team achieve lifetime personal-best splits.
The 200 freestyle relay team was the same swimmers, with the exception of Caneta being swapped out for senior Juanita Barreto. The relay team swam a 1.30.16, good enough for third place and second-best in school history in the event.
Jonsdottir also clocked in at 22.50 in the 50 freestyle, which is the fifth-best in school history and earned her 12th place in the event final.
Sophomore Kat Simonovic recorded a personal season-best in the preliminary round of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4.47.06. Her performance sent her to the finals to compete in Group B, where she finished 14th with a time of 4.49.72.
Another senior making her last Pac-12 Championships appearance was Tory Houston, who reached the final round of the 200 breaststroke with a preliminary time of 2.13.30. In the finals, she clocked in at 2.12.24 and touched the pad in eighth place.
Diving:
ASU diving has arguably been the most dominant aspect of this year's team and features both experienced and young talent.
Senior Hailey Casper scored a 343.45 in the final round of the 3-meter dive, which earned third place and became ASU's best score in the event this season.
Freshman Mara Aiacoboae also earned a spot in the final round, where she placed seventh with a cumulative score of 278.30 on her six dives.
In addition, Aiacoboae also placed first in the preliminary round of the women's platform dive with a score of 287.90. Although she scored a 322.00 in the final round, she dropped to fourth place and missed out on a top-two mark by just 2.30 points.
Junior Hunter Atha reached the finals in the men's platform dive for the second straight year with his preliminary performance. He placed sixth in the final with a score of 330.50, which was a spot better than his seventh place finish in the preliminary round of the event.
The ASU men's swimming team will compete in its own wave of the Pac-12 Championships on March 4-7. Also, the ASU diving team will compete in the Zone E Diving Championships before respective members of the ASU swim and dive team compete in the NCAA Championships in late March.
