On Wednesday, ASU's star freshman diver David Hoffer was named Pac-12 Diver of the Month for January, making it his second consecutive diver of the month award.
During his dominant stretch in January, he placed top-three in every meet, including three first-place finishes. His award was the 16th of that kind in ASU swim and dive history, which is the most of any Pac-12 program.
"I have just been taking instructions from my coach, who has been doing a great job, and I'm just trying my best to stay in shape and recover each week," Hoffer said.
He won both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives against Cal with scores of 331.80 and 393.30, respectively. In addition, he placed second in the 1-meter against Stanford and third in the 3-meter.
Only in his first season, Hoffer said he has already felt welcomed into the program.
"Everyone has been majorly accommodating, supporting me and helping me correct some of my mistakes throughout the season," he said.
He ended his award-winning month with a first-place finish in the preliminary round of the 3-meter dive in the Air Force Diving Invitational, which he followed up with a second-place finish in the championship round of the event.
Hoffer has now won two out of three diver of the month awards given by the Pac-12 in the 2014-15 season.
Even with great success coming early, he said his consistency is something he can improve.
Hoffer said he is unsure of whether he will need to be a leader but is in position to do so if need be.
"That will depend on the divers we have coming in next year," he said. "if so, I will lead by example, because I think the best way to lead is by doing your job correctly so others follow,"
This month's Pac-12 Diver of the Month Award is just another accomplishment in ASU diving's successful 2014-2015 season.
"We always put our best foot forward and give our full effort not only for ourselves, but for the team," Hoffer said.
He will be competing in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives Saturday in Tucson against rival Arizona.
