Along with a brief bio, we’ll give you information about where the candidates stand on five issues relevant to ASU students: education, immigration, reproductive rights, marijuana legalization and LGBTQA issues.
Here’s what you need to know about the candidates for Arizona’s Superintendent of Public Instruction. Find the rest of our races to watch here.
Diane Douglas (Republican)
Republican Diane Douglas, artist and former Peoria Unified School District Governing Board president, was selected as the Republican candidate for Arizona superintendent after she defeated incumbent John Huppenthal in the primary election.
Douglas said she does not support the educational standards commonly known as Common Core. Her stance on the standards were key in her win in the primaries, because Huppenthal was in favor of the standards.
David Garcia (Democrat)
David Garcia, professor at ASU and former Arizona Associate Superintendent of Public Instruction for Standards and Accountability, ran unopposed in the August primaries.
Garcia said he believes in making Arizona’s educational standards more rigorous, but he also wants to work on resolving issues related to implementation of news standards and increasing education funding.
