Bravo to the city of Seattle for approving raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, which would be the highest in the country by a considerable margin. The proposal was unanimously approved by the city council and will be available to all businesses by 2021.
Boo to ASU’s early playoff exits. The softball team, which was the No. 9 overall seed in the tournament, was eliminated in regionals after two one-run losses to Michigan. ASU baseball didn’t fare any better, losing to Pepperdine and Sacramento State in regionals to end its championship hopes.
Booravo to Jonah Hill. An obvious boo for his use of a homophobic slur directed at a paparazzo, but a bravo because he quickly gave a sincere and thoughtful apology on The Howard Stern Show, and it always warms the heart to see the paparazzi being called out.
Bravo to new upcoming features and updates for Apple devices, revealed at the 2014 Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. The company shared some exciting updates for Apple users, such as a new Mac OSX operating system and new designs for iPhones and iPads. Some highlights include better ways to share files with other devices, a built-in health/fitness app on iPhones and a Mail Drop feature, which will make it easier to send large files.
Boo to sexism. A new study by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign found that hurricanes with female names were deadlier because people took hurricanes with feminine names less seriously than those with masculine names. According to researchers, a more feminine name equated to more fatalities caused by the storm, Time reported. As if sexism wasn’t bad enough as it is — now it has indirectly caused people to die.
Bravo to the ASU Art Museum's Andy Warhol exhibit. The free exhibit will feature six prints from the master of pop art and will run through the summer.
Boo to the death Saturday of an ASU student. Business student Brandon Ellingson drowned in a boating incident at Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks. It's always hard to lose a fellow Sun Devil, and our thoughts are with Ellingson's family and friends.
Booravo to Justin Bieber. Video surfaced of the troubled pop heartthrob at 15 telling a racist joke, but he handled a subsequent apology with far more aplomb than elders like Shia LeBoeuf and Donald Sterling. Maybe there's hope for him yet.
