Tempe Police reported the following incidents Sunday:
- A 20-year-old Lima, Ohio, man was arrested Feb. 24 on the intersection of South 52nd Street and West Broadway Road on suspicion of marijuana possession and use, according to a police report.
The man was in the passenger seat of a vehicle that an officer stopped during a routine traffic violation, police said.
The vehicle was rented by the man's brother in Ohio, the report said.
The officer said the man appeared to be very nervous, so police asked him to step out of the car to speak with them, the report said.
When the man exited the vehicle, police saw an orange Gatorade bottle on the floorboard where he was sitting, according to the report.
The officer found a small quantity of a green, leafy substance identified as marijuana inside the bottle, police said.
During a post-Miranda interview, the man told police he “smoked a little bit of marijuana,” and that he was the only one smoking, according to the report.
The man refused to tell police where he bought the marijuana and asked for a lawyer, the report said.
The man said he had only been in town for a couple of days with his father and a friend, police reported.
A search revealed the man’s father was in federal prison for six years on drug sale charges, according to the report.
Officers talked to all the other occupants of the vehicle about their trip to Arizona from Ohio and none of their stories were consistent, police said.
The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and released pending charges, according to the report.
- A 36-year-old man was arrested Feb. 24 on the intersection of Weber Drive and North McAllister Avenue on suspicion of being a fugitive from justice, according to a police report.
Police contacted the man after getting a call about a person trying to open the rear door of a residence on the 900 block of East Henry Street, the report said.
The officer who responded to the call was about to leave the scene when he saw the man riding his bicycle without a light, according to the report.
The officer identified himself and asked the man to stop, but the man started to pedal faster, police said.
When police caught up to him, the man said he was just trying to “take his bike home,” because he knew he had a probation warrant, according to the report.
The man was detained and a records search revealed a Maricopa County Superior Court felony warrant, police said.
The man was transported to Tempe City Jail, where he was booked and held to see a judge, according to the report.
