Water leak causes power outage on Tempe campus

A water leak at the Tempe campus’ central power plant damaged electrical systems on Thursday morning, University spokeswoman Julie Newberg said.

The outages affected 20 to 30 percent of the campus’ buildings, turning off power for close to three hours, she said. A total of 27 buildings, including every building in the science and engineering wings, were affected.

The affected buildings were all in the central corridor of campus, stretching from the Sun Devil Fitness Complex on Apache Boulevard to the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on College Avenue near Veterans Way. They included the bookstore, Health Services and Palo Verde East and West.

Newberg said University operations continued as usual and ASU instructed employees to consult their supervisors for directions about how to proceed.

The first campus advisory was sent at 7:30 a.m. Power was restored to all buildings by 10 a.m.
