Literally Speaking: Winter Break

In case you didn't already know, the last week of classes has arrived. Let the dance parties and cheering commence!

Or maybe we should wait until after finals.

While I finish up the last of my essays, and squeeze in the last bit of studying for exams, I can't help but get excited about the things I have the opportunity to do over winter break.

Aside from studying for the GRE and the LSAT (Eeeep, grad school!), and going to work, I will be reading, writing, and cooking.

Here are a few of my planned literary and culinary winter adventures:

  1. Reading "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I was recently at one of the Phoenix YMCA locations where they were holding a book sale. If there is ever a book sale, you know I am there. The paperback books were 50 cents, and the hardcover books were a dollar. This is where I found the Marquez book. I've heard wonderful things about the book and hope I'll be able to finish it.
  2. Perfecting the art of making dough. I feel like once you know how to make the perfect dough, the world of baking has been unlocked, or you've been one-upped in the culinary sphere. I hope to make chicken pot pies, apple pies, and possibly some breads.
  3. Reading "Eat, Pray, Love." Hopefully this will help with the dough-making. And just cooking and bubbly inspiration in general.
  4. Creating new and unique omelets. I have way too much fun putting random foods into omelets. I plan to continue this tradition.
  5. Reading Steve Martin's "An Object of Beauty". Steve Martin never ceases to amaze me. Growing up, I knew him solely as an actor in all of the movies that made me feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. Then, I found out he was a musician. I shouldn't be so surprised at this point, now that I have found out he is also a novelist.
  6. Reading Sherman Alexie's "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven." One of my history teachers from high school gave this book to me as a graduation gift. After all this time, I still have not had a chance to read it. This winter, I plan to make time for it. When I pulled the book off my shelf, I also discovered a Changing Hands gift card hidden in the pages--it's my lucky day!
  7. Finding decadent holiday recipes. Chocolate. Fruit. That is all.
