No. 27 Arizona State (24-under 840)
finished in fourth place at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational, held in
Princeville, Hawaii. Meanwhile CSU Fullerton
(42-under 822) won the tournament.
Sophomore Jon Rahm (9-under 207) and junior Austin Quick (9-under 207) both finished tied for 8th place.
Coach Tim Mickelson was very pleased with Quick’s play in particular.
“I am very impressed with Austin’s play this week, especially with his 66 in the second round, which included nothing higher than a 4 on the scorecard,” Mickelson said. “That’s tough to do.”
Mickelson also said that he has been very appreciative of Rahm’s efforts to compete this fall even with his ailing wrist. Rahm is scheduled to have surgery and be 100 percent by spring.
ASU had a rough first day shooting a 284, but climbed back up the leaderboards with an impressive 274 on the second day. However, the Sun Devils could not find their stroke on the final day, shooting a 282.
Mickelson said he was not extremely happy with the team’s overall performance in the tournament.
“Overall I’m disappointed in the result of this tournament as we again did not play up to our ability, and I feel we underachieved greatly,” Mickelson said. “I’m not sure how I will get this changed, but it will be done as we will not accept mediocrity within this program. We strive for excellence and I expect excellence.”
Other Sun Devil finishes were junior Broc Johnson (1-under 215) tied for 41st place, freshman Nicolo Galletti (even-216) tied for 47th place, junior Mathias Schjoelberg (even-216) tied for 47th place and sophomore Alberto Sanchez (1-over 217) tied for 52nd place.
The Sun Devils have an extended break until they start up again in the spring at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, held in Waikoloa, Hawai’I from Feb. 6-8.
Mickelson said he is looking forward to the first event of spring and having a full team.
“We have about 10 weeks to prepare for our first event of the spring,” said Mickelson. “I am looking forward to being at full strength in the spring when we get (sophomore) Max Rottluff back from his wrist injury. Expect good things in the spring.”
