Sun Devil football anticipating season opener

Saturday night was a mixed bag for tight end Chris Coyle and his roommates.

With the ASU football team having a first-week bye, the Sun Devils were forced to watch from their couches as the rest of the college football world started their respective seasons.

“It was nice in that we got to sit down and relax and let our bodies recuperate a little bit,” Coyle said. “But I know, at least my roommates and I, (offensive linemen) Kody Koebensky and Tyler Sulka, we were a little bit jealous that they got to go out and have some fun.”

Senior linebacker Steffon Martin was a little more animated while watching Clemson University and The Univesity of Georgia duke it out on Saturday night.

“It kinda made me mad,” Martin said. “Around the Georgia (vs.) Clemson game, I was so ready to hit anybody moving.”

Martin hasn’t had the chance to hit anybody other than his own teammates in months, so it’s no surprise he’s looking forward to hitting somebody else.

Now, with a seemingly endless offseason over, the Sun Devils enter their game week preparations.

“I can’t even put it in words, I’m so happy,” Martin said. “I’m so tired of going against my own teammates and knowing in a couple days that I actually get to hit somebody else. I just can’t wait for the first game.”

Coyle said he was equally anxious while watching the game with his roommates.

“We’re kind of tired of playing against each other, our own defense and stuff," he said. "We’re looking forward to going out and finally being able to show everyone what we’ve been working on this whole offseason.”

Practice Notes

- In the punting battle, junior Dom Vizzare continues to take the first team reps over freshman Matt Haack although neither punter looked outstanding today.

- Redshirt senior Robert Nelson was back at field safety running with the first team. On Friday redshirt junior Mesa Community College transfer Damarious Randall was running with the first team at field safety.
