Bravo to a group in Seattle that is pushing to make minimum wage in Washington $15 an hour. The state already boasts the highest minimum wage in the country at $9.19 an hour, and one Seattle City Council candidate said she would make the issue the focus of her campaign. Meanwhile, other city council members and the mayor said they would consider it. Boo to unnecessary deaths of young children. A 1-year-old child was shot in his stroller while he was out with his father in Brooklyn. Police are investigating whether the shot was intended for the father in a gang-related incident. Also, a Tempe father shot his 3-month-old son before shooting himself in a murder-suicide on Aug. 26.
Bravo to Diana Nyad for being the first to swim the distance from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage. The 64-year-old completed the roughly 110-mile trip in just under 53 hours.
Boo to NCAA officials for suspending Johnny Manziel for a measly 30 minutes. Apparently the NCAA thought it had to prove a point even though it had no evidence to condemn Johnny Football. Manziel, who signed autographs (for free) before the game, further rubbed their lack of proof in the faces of these officials when he came out and rolled over the opposing defense in the second half.
Bravo to Electric Zoo's decision to cancel the NYC music festival after two concertgoers died and others were hospitalized after apparent drug-related incidents.
Boo to Craig Cobb for trying to buy property in the town of Leith, N.D., for the sole purpose of creating a white supremacist community.
Bravo to the ASU football team for reportedly engaging coach Todd Graham in talks for a contract extension. After an 8-5 season Graham led the Sun Devils to their first bowl win since 2005. At the same time, boo to the football team. Graham has only been here one year. This season, the Sun Devils have high expectations, and falling short of those would be a huge disappointment. Administration should wait at least one more year.
Boo to Phoenix’s Red Hut Coffee for shamelessly mocking homeless people. The café co-owner posted a photo Aug. 21 posing with thumbs up along two presumably homeless men lying down. Since then, the community has been irate and plans to boycott the business.
Bravo to ASU for being one of 55 BCS football schools to alter their policies in the wake of the 2011 sex scandal at Penn State. A mere policy change cannot, unfortunately, entirely erase the inexcusable actions of Jerry Sandusky and others who tried to cover up his crimes, but it's a step on the way to making sure it cannot happen again.
Boo to Twitter's new update, the blue line. Not only is it annoying, it's also reminiscent of a pregnancy test, and no one wants to think about that.
