Bravo to back-to-school fashion, when everyone puts in extra effort to look presentable for the first few weeks of school. Come October, we'll all be looking like we rolled out of bed and ran to class — likely because that's what happened. But for now, we still look fresh-faced and fresh to death. Good job, Sun Devils.
Boo to the scores of students who congest the Memorial Union every semester for the first few weeks of school. You are the reason why we will soon need traffic lights for pedestrians.
Bravo to Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in the "Man of Steel" sequel. Many people have responded to this bit of casting news with dismay or even outrage, but the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" was met with a similar reaction. Ledger went on to win a posthumous Academy Award for his trouble. But we're wondering, does handing the keys to the Batmobile over to Affleck mean Matt Damon will be the new Robin?
Boo to Miley Cyrus’s performance at the VMAs. Let us clarify: We’re not booing her racy, skin-colored leotard, but rather her outlandish, frankly weird behavior. The performance reeked of “trying too hard,” from her making inappropriate gestures with a foam finger to twerking up against Canadian-American artist Robin Thicke. The whole act was more childish than anything Cyrus did during her stint as Hannah Montana.
Bravo to Sun Devil Athletics for implementing a new student season ticket seat reservation process last Saturday. This new reservation process allows student season ticket holders to reserve a seat for every home football game this season. This means no more having to arrive four hours before game time to get good seats and fewer people passing out from heat exhaustion.
Boo to the Tempe man who police say abandoned 15 cats in an apartment with no air conditioning during June, July and August. Officers found one of the cats dead in a kitchen drawer, and most of the others had to be treated at an animal hospital in Tempe for malnourishment and dehydration.
Bravo to ASU for being one of five academic institutions that will receive parts of a meteorite that exploded over California’s Sierra Foothills in April 2012. The University’s Center for Meteorite Studies will have a chance to research and study the rare meteorite.
Boo to justice systems around the globe, which this week decided to give a retrial to Hosni Mubarak and a retrial on a sentencing for Jodi Arias.
Bravo to the group Aim4Peace, which has helped Kansas City reduce crime and violence in the area.
Boo to the return of CNN's "Crossfire," a tired exercise in punditry discontinued in 2005. The show features guests from "the left" and "the right" and only serves to reinforce the idea of an overly simplified left-right political spectrum. As Jon Stewart said in a 2004 appearance on the show, the hosts of such shows on purported news networks "have a responsibility to the public discourse and... fail miserably."
Bravo to Indian law enforcement for taking swift action following this violent act. By Sunday, police had arrested five suspects. The country as a whole has improved at reporting, investigating and prosecuting sexual assaults since the highly-publicized gang rape and death of a college student in December.
Boo to the gang-rape of a young photojournalist in Mumbai last week. The woman, a 22-year-old intern at a local magazine, was out on a shoot with a male companion when five men tied up her partner, took her to a different part of the deserted complex and took turns raping her.
