Sophomore shortstop Drew Stankiewicz started off No. 20 ASU baseball’s Pac-12 road opener against No. 3 Oregon State with a bang by singling to right-center field.
After that, the Sun Devils (12-6-1, 1-3 Pac-12) managed only three base runners and no hits the rest of the night and dropped the opener of the three game series to the Beavers 5-0.
Beaver senior pitcher Matt Boyd shut the Sun Devils down all night, throwing a complete game shutout and struck out a career-high 11 batters.
No Sun Devil runner reached third base and it was the first time the Sun Devils had been one-hit since the final game of the 1983 College World Series against Alabama.
The Beavers (20-1, 4-0 Pac-12) got the lead for Boyd quickly when sophomore designated hitter Dylan Davis's single brought senior right fielder Ryan Barnes home in the bottom of the first.
Oregon State struck again in the second off Sun Devil junior starter Trevor Williams when Beaver junior catcher Jake Rodriguez doubled in junior second baseman Kavin Keyes to double their lead.
Williams allowed an unearned run in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to complete his night after only five innings.
The junior from San Diego gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned), two walks and six strikeouts to move to 3-2 on the season.
A trio of three Sun Devil relievers finished out the final three innings and only allowed two hits and one run.
The Sun Devils and Beavers will resume their series tomorrow at 2:05 p.m.
