Fire crews responded to elevator smoke inside the Tempe campus Interdisciplinary B building on 1100 S. Cady Mall Monday night.

An overheated motor inside of the first-floor elevator caused smoke to rise and a nearby vent spread the smoke throughout the building, according to Tempe Fire officials.

Teachers and students were evacuated from the three-story building after engines responded to the structure fire around 4 p.m.

“My eyes started getting irritated …  There was a faint smoking smell,” said Sandy Martinez, business operations specialist for the School of Transborder Studies located on the first floor.

A text alert sent out by ASU around 4:24 p.m. stated the building was reopened and the west side elevator is not operational.
