St. Louis Cardinals defy conventional wisdom

Just when you thought the St. Louis Cardinals were done, they struck again.

Last year, they trailed the Atlanta Braves by 10.5 games in the Wild Card standings on Aug. 27, and ended up winning the World Series.

In Game 6 of the World Series, they trailed by two runs going into the ninth inning before tying the game. In the 10th inning, the Cardinals trailed by two but scored two again. Then in the 11th, they won on a walk-off home run.

After that season they lost basemen Albert Pujols and manager Tony La Russa.

No problem for the Cardinals.

This year, the Cardinals quietly snuck into the playoffs as the second wild card team and subsequently won their wild card playoff.

In Game 5 of the NLDS against the Washington Nationals, they trailed 6-0 entering the fourth inning. Again, this was not a problem for the never-say-never Cardinals.

Down to their final strike, they scored four runs in the ninth inning to steal the series from the Nationals, who had MLB’s best regular season record.

If we’ve learned one thing, it’s this: You can never count out the Cardinals.
