ASU wrestling holds intrasquad Wrestle-Offs

In preparation for its season opener on Nov. 9, the ASU wrestling team held its annual Maroon and Gold Wrestle-Offs on Friday.

The Gold team, led by redshirt senior heavyweight Levi Cooper, defeated the Maroon team 15-12.

At 125 pounds, redshirt sophomore Dalton Miller defeated freshman Ares Carpio 13-1 in the opening match to give the Gold team a quick 4-0 lead.

Freshman Matt Kraus brought the Maroon squad back, besting redshirt freshman Alex Schmersahl 10-3 at 143 pounds.

Redshirt freshman Preston McCalmon gave the Maroon team another win, beating redshirt sophomore Joel Smith in a 5-4 decision.

Freshman Codey Combs brought the Gold team back, dominating sophomore Rush Hall from the Maroon team 12-0 at 157 pounds.

Freshman Parker Madl extended the Gold team’s lead with a 1-0 decision victory over freshman Ray Waters at 165 pounds.

At 174 pounds, redshirt freshman Blake Stauffer of the Maroon team defeated freshman Christiaan Allen 9-2 by decision to bring the deficit back to two.

Redshirt sophomore Kevin Radford picked up a win for the Maroon team at 184 pounds over redshirt senior Jake Meredith 2-1 to give Maroon a 12-11 lead.

The Gold team was not to be denied, as Cooper beat freshman Luke Bean 8-0 in the heavyweight match to give Gold the 15-12 win.

The results of the intrasquad contest will help determine the roster, as ASU travels to North Carolina for its first match of the season.
