As a legal, of-age college student, I think that there is one thing that is necessary to have that can actually be a fun DIY project: a flask. It is small, portable, and can make weekend excursions super cheap, if you catch my drift. You can buy a flask from various vendors, including online websites such as CKBProducts or a particular store if you prefer. They come in a range of sizes and prices, but can be found at a pretty reasonable cost if you look in the right places.
My favorite thing to do with this craft is to cover the entire flask with decoupage designs. To decoupage, you use Mod Podge glue and various types of paper. As I have stated in previous posts, you just glue your piece of paper down and then coat it with the Mod Podge to give it a glazed sort of feel. I think using this method makes it very easy to customize your flask with whatever you want on them.
After I first made a flask for myself, I began to get requests from my friends for flasks as well. They always would ask me to include something that they particularly. In the past I have used Pokemon cards, a picture the Texas Flag, lines from books, cut outs from magazines, tissue paper, pictures of guitars and other musically related things, and “Hello My Name Is...” stickers, among other items. Each flask comes out with a totally unique feel.
Once dry, make sure to spray your flask with a type of gloss finish, such as the one from Royal Coat, or a type of finish that will prevent damage when wet. Let this dry as well.
Things to note about this craft:
- Please, please, please (I can’t emphasize this enough) rinse out your flask before starting the crafting process. If you do not it will probably taste horrible.
- Watch your glue and spray usage around the top of the flask. This will also make whatever beverage you put in there taste awful.
- Despite number two, make sure you cover the top part of the flask, just not the area where your mouth goes because that tends to be difficult. But I think the less amount of metal seen, the better.
- When you pour your beverage into the flask, be careful and use a funnel. Even though you sprayed your flask, you did just use glue and paper, so the design isn’t 100 percent fail-proof. However, if you’re careful about spillage, it will last.
Once you make yourself a flask, all your friends are going to be harassing you for one as well! Please be responsible and if you have any questions/comments, contact me as always at fbreisbl@asu.edu.
