Boo to the toughest sheriff in America running for another term in Maricopa County. Aside from the allegations of overlooked sexual molestation and Gestapo-style raids on the valley’s Hispanic communities, 20 years as king of the Wild West is just too long of a term. It’s time for a change. Most Arizona men Joe Arpaio’s age are trading in their driver’s licenses for fishing poles or moving to retirement communities in Sun City. Give someone else a turn, Joe.

Bravo to ASU junior linebacker Vontaze Burfict deciding to forgo his senior season and enter the 2012 NFL draft. Coming out of high school, Burfict was regarded as one of the best recruits to ever commit to the Sun Devils. While Burfict’s freshman season lived up to the hype, the junior linebacker has been in a steady decline ever since. His personal foul penalties became a constant in ASU football games. Burfict is certainly a talented football player, but his attitude, decision-making and commitment became a detriment to the football team. With Erickson’s firing and rumors of Osweiler’s potential departure, it appears that the team we watched in 2011 will look nothing like the team we’ll see in 2012 — which might be a good thing.

Boo to Americans forgetting about separation of church and state. For years, President Obama has been accused of being Muslim (as if that’s a bad thing) and now Republican hopeful Mitt Romney is under attack for his affiliation with the Mormon Church. Think of this issue like Thanksgiving dinner: Religion and politics just do not mix. Evangelical Christians refuse to vote for a Mormon and others refuse to support a “Muslim.” In the meantime, the economy is still in shambles, nobody really knows if the war in the Middle East is actually over and somehow, pizza is a vegetable. Focus on the issues.

Bravo to other Arizona colleges who started their spring semesters later in the month on a regular schedule. Other students are still enjoying vacations while ASU students are scrambling to unpack. Though the weather indicates springtime is near, the calendar certainly does not. Your move, ASU.

Boo to excruciatingly long lines at the bookstore and just a general feeling of being unprepared to begin the new semester. Faculty has been showing up to class with no syllabi and students have been showing up to class with no books. Despite having heavily-staffed registers, the ASU Bookstore was in no way prepared for the onslaught of textbook-hungry Sun Devils who were forced to wait in lines that extended down the street to the Computer Commons. If you’re forcing us to be two weeks early, preparedness is key.
