Varying from all art concentrations, the Undergraduate Juried Show accepted submissions from ASU art students ranging from figurative works to more abstract pieces. Submission into the gallery proved to be a competitive process: 114 submissions were whittled down by visiting assistant professors and jurors of the show, Ellie Honl and Jessica Metcalfe.
The pieces displayed are of a variety of media, including photography, printmaking, sculpture, woods, metals, drawing and intermedia. Undergraduate art student Kelsey Williams helped curate the gallery.
“Since the craftsmanship and conceptual elements behind the pieces were so great this year, the two professors chose slightly over the limit and picked 27 pieces total,” she said.
The Gallery Exhibitions course taught by gallery director Peter Bugg and graduate student Bobby Zokaites was responsible for the curation of the entire exhibition. After the jurying process, students in the class chose the layout, and then installed the work Friday night. The collaboration involved deciding the best location and display method for each piece.
“The process went incredibly smooth, and the entire class is very pleased with the outcome,” Williams said.
Over the course of the semester, students in the class reviewed and evaluated local exhibitions to prepare for the shows they organized. This is the second show they have installed as group, though they have also created displays for cases on the first floor of the art building.
Professor Honl and professor Metcalfe’s had tough choices to make for the exhibition, Bugg said.
“Due to the large amount and high quality of the work, they had a very difficult time whittling it down, but they eventually chose a show that I think well represents the variety in both media and style of the kind of work students at ASU are making,” Bugg said.
The Undergraduate Juried Show will be running from Dec. 5 to Jan. 6, with the opening reception on Dec. 6 in the Harry Wood Gallery on the Tempe campus from 6 to 8 p.m. Prizes will be announced at 7 p.m.
