We are thankful for the return of Four Peaks Pumpkin Porter, one of the best seasonal beers ever to grace the Valley. It is common to see pumpkin ales, but not porters. We raise our glasses to Four Peaks for coming up with such a unique and delicious concoction. They tap the first keg Wednesday. It is time to for the Occupy Local Brewery movement. Head over to Four Peaks and support the home team. If you have never been, then this is an opportune time for you to experience the magic of Four Peaks and their famous pumpkin porter.
We are not thankful for the Sun Devils loss to UA. It was unbearable and awful — ASU was favored heavily and still managed to bungle this one, just like the team did against UCLA and WSU. Between missed tackles and a lukewarm offense, the Wildcats proved just to be too ferocious for ASU. If fate wills it, the Sun Devils could still end up in the Pac-12 championship. The team has to beat Cal, UCLA must fall to USC and Utah must beat Colorado. Talk about a messy road to the title game. While we would love it if the Sun Devils would make it to the championship game, but will not be surprised if it doesn’t happen.
We are thankful for the four-day weekend. Turkey, football and awkward family conversations — the holidays are definitely upon us. One of the best parts of Thanksgiving is the nice break it gives us from school. Sure, we should probably be studying for our imminent avalanche of final exams and writing our last papers, but how would that be fun? The areas surrounding ASU have more than enough caffeine to keep us all awake for a week straight, so we’ll go ahead and enjoy the weekend.
We are not thankful for the deficit reduction committee that failed miserably. The committee, which arose from the debt-ceiling debacle over the summer, was charged with finding $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction. Guess what? They didn’t reach a deal. Between taxes, military spending, entitlement programs and the like, the two parties were just too far apart on issues. While we expected this, it would have been a pleasure to see them succeed. A deal would prove that our government can still function, but alas this isn’t the case. I guess this only worsens Congress’ image as the most despised aspect of public life. Who’s counting when your approval rating is in the single digits, though?
We are thankful for home cooking. Thanksgiving will bring everyone around a table filled with goodies — turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, the obligatory vegetables, mashed potatoes and pie. It will be a nice change of pace from Hot Pockets and Ramen to this delicious food. Our microwaves definitely need a break, too, from all those microwaveable pizzas. While we might leave home several pounds heavier, we only have two words: worth it.
