The other day I got into a discussion with a friend about parity in professional sports.
They were complaining about how the same few teams seem to win every year.
But it could be so much worse. In the majority of European soccer leagues, one or two teams dominate the landscape every year.
And to be honest, our parity problems pale in comparison.
The last five teams to win the World Series were the Red Sox, the Phillies, the Yankees, the Giants and the Cardinals.
In the NBA? The Spurs, the Celtics, the Lakers twice and the Mavericks.
The last five teams to win the Super Bowl were the Colts, the Giants, the Steelers, the Saints, and the Packers.
The last five teams to win the English Premier league? Manchester United, Manchester United, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester United.
And Spain’s La Liga shaped up like this: Real Madrid, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Barcelona and Barcelona.
The moral of the story: Our major sports enjoy a parity rarely seen in the rest of the world.
So, stop complaining and enjoy your American sports. It’s the one country where the underdog actually has a chance.
