A Pepsi delivery truck that pulled down a utility pole by the wires sparked a fire at a Circle K near the Tempe campus Monday afternoon.
Tempe Fire spokesman Mike Reichling said the truck was exiting the parking lot of the store near Rural Road and Lemon Street at approximately 12:40 p.m. when a top corner of the truck caught onto low hanging wires and pulled a utility pole down to the ground.
The power lines were separated from the roof of the building and caused the fire in the back of the store, Reichling said. It also caused a power outage to the Circle K and a Dutch Bros. Coffee nearby.
Emergency crews were on the scene to douse the fire and keep cars and pedestrians away from possible electrical activity because of the live wires.
An APS maintenance crew eventually began fixing the wires to get the power turned back on.
Northbound traffic on Rural Road was forced to take alternate routes around the site because of the police, fire and maintenance crews on scene.
Reichling said no one was hurt or injured during the incident. The estimated damage is unknown at this time.
