Bravo to the Arizona Diamondbacks for forcing a decisive Game Five against the Brewers. D-Backs fans across the state were a little worried after the team fell behind 0-2 in the series, but Paul Goldschmidt and Ryan Roberts hit grand slams in back-to-back games and Arizona kept its postseason hopes alive. It’s all rather fitting, since the D-Backs have been the comeback kids all year, and although most of us have no fingernails left, this has been the most fun we’ve had watching baseball in a while. Let’s hope we see them in the NLCS.
Boo to increasing water rates in Tempe. The City Council approved a rate increase of 8.7 percent last month. The changes go into effect in November. College students are all too poor, but still love their hot showers. Either we will have to pick up more shifts at work to pay for the hot showers or we will just use up all the scalding water this month. Another pickle we find ourselves in involves clean dishes. Perhaps we should just learn to clean our dishes with paper towels? But that would go against everything ASU taught us about being sustainable. What to do? If you figure it out, let us know.
Bravo to the Game Day Initiative. This year the effort to hype students up about Sun Devil Athletics has really taken off. Last year’s efforts proved nowhere near the turn out we are seeing this year. Yes, it helps to have a winning football team. But the Initiative’s social media intern said that students have led the attempt this year. Students know what students enjoy, so it was a good call on the organizers’ part. Also, the effort is expanding to all sports this year, particularly men’s and women’s basketball. As we have seen at home football games this year, when students turn out, we win. Our support provides the extra boost the Sun Devils need. Turn out. Be loud. Wear gold.
Boo to iPhone thieves. On Monday and Wednesday of this week two people had their iPhones stolen out of their hands outside of the Schwada Building. Just because Steve Jobs’ untimely death occurred this week does not mean stealing Apple products is now OK. Also, this quick grab stealing technique is rather bothersome.
Bravo to the Zombie vs. Humans game that took place on the West campus this week. Students pretended the zombie apocalypse had come, and the goal of the game was to stay human until Friday night. Part of the game involved running around with Nerf guns. Now, we don’t know how you spent your childhood, but we could hardly put our Nerf weapons down. Plus, you can’t go wrong with an undead apocalypse. It’s also an excellent way to let steam off since midterms are just around the corner.
