Bravo to a final season of “Arrested Development” and a full-length movie. The show, which ran from 2003 to 2006, went to the chopping blocks a little too early. Thankfully the creators have listened to fans and noticed the cult following it has drawn. The series will come back to life, even if it is only for a short period of time. News of the rebirth of the Bluth family brought smiles to our faces, and we hope it did to yours. Perhaps we find their interactions so funny because it mirrors our dysfunctional reality. Also, we can’t wait to see them act as a “model” household.
Boo to the NBA owners and players’ union. Because a collective bargaining agreement has not been reached — even after the NBA locked out on July 1 — the league announced on Monday the first two weeks of the 2011-12 season is canceled, and commissioner David Stern threatened he will cancel more games through Christmas if a deal is not made by Tuesday. It could be a long time before we see the Suns play again, and several businesses in downtown Phoenix fear they will lose a lot of revenue out of this.
Bravo to Urban Outreach. The program, based in the Tempe First United Methodist Church, provides services to many of the homeless in Tempe. Three mornings a week — Monday, Wednesday and Friday — showers are offered as well as an evening program. Food is also served every week. Perhaps the best part is that people turn out in droves to help the homeless. More than 200 people volunteer regularly, and many are Sun Devils. It is incredible to see students giving back to their community. In the struggling economy, people can have trouble making ends meet, but programs like Urban Outreach and its volunteers are there to lend people a helping hand.
Boo to the absence of a Fall Break in this year’s academic calendar. While many people across the state — including the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law students — get a week without tests, homework, teachers and papers, we are stuck in Hayden Library watching the stack of empty coffee cups grow as we study for midterms. To add insult to injury the administration shortened our Holiday Break by at least a week. Whoever thought this academic schedule was a good idea should have their brain checked. We want a road trip!
Bravo to Project Rose. This is an effort done in tandem with ASU, the Phoenix Police Department and community organizations that all work to given prostitutes a second chance. When “arrested,” prostitutes are taken to Bethany Bible Church where they are then given a meal and clothes along with a hygiene kit. The women also receive information about alternatives and support. When some see this as the only option, efforts like this need to step in, and it is pretty inspirational to hear stories about women turning their life around.
