It started with the release of a mysteriously vague promotional video. “It’s time” was the statement. “Time for what?” was the question on students’ minds.
After more than a year of working with Nike and more than a week of hype, ASU finally answered that question.
At a much-anticipated news conference, the athletic department revealed a number of changes to the Sun Devils’ sports appearance, including a new font created for and owned by ASU, a new pitchfork, and new uniforms.
Tim Healey, the voice of the Rustlers, commented that the changes will turn a new page for the university.
“The next chapter of Sun Devils’ athletics starts now,” Healey said.
The new font, called Sun Devil Bold, will be featured on all athletic apparel.
The new logo, to be featured on the football helmets, is a modern pitchfork reminiscent of ancient tridents, a new symbol for the Sun Devil community, according to Lisa Love, the Vice President of University Athletics.
“It’s not just a pitchfork,” Love said. “It’s a pitchfork with an attitude.”
The new uniforms revealed for volleyball, softball, basketball and football featured the updated color palette of maroon, gold, copper and black.
The new black uniforms for football and basketball drew a strong response from the students, including freshman business major Jason Giglio.
“I love the black,” Giglio said. “I love the change in the numbers. Favorite part of the whole thing is the matte black helmet.” The changes hope to spark a new age for the athletic department, according to Sarah Rice, senior catcher for the Sun Devil softball team.
“If you were in the presentation, you definitely felt a lot more tradition than has been going on lately,” Rice said. “I think it riled every team up that was in the presentation.”
