Love is in the air at America’s Taco Shop, the restaurant owned by a husband and wife duo, Terry and America. Growing up in Mexico cooking alongside her mother, America has earned the right to proclaim her shop as “Home of the Greatest Carne Asada in the Valley!”
Many people say they “make their food [and drinks] with love.” I have proof America’s Taco Shop really does instill passion in every item. While debating between ordering the homemade agua fresca (a Mexican fruit juice beverage) and the tropical passion iced tea, I began visiting with the cashier. As she graciously offered me a sample, the lovely young woman told me she met her fiancé after he came in regularly to order the tea they serve. Apparently it’s rare to find, but maybe that was just his excuse because the two fell in love and are getting married this spring.
I also found love at America’s Taco Shop, but in their food and prices. For $10, my friend and I split 4 tacos, chips, salsa, iced tea, and agua fresca–what a deal! Thanks to ASU’s Student Insider coupon book we got 2 tacos free with the “Buy 2 tacos, get 2 free” coupon on page 143.
Served on corn tortillas, the two types of tacos are equally unbelievable and only $2.25 each. The carne asada is juicy, flavorful, and authentic, paired with guacamole, caramelized onions and fire-roasted tomato salsa. The marinated pork, called Al Pastor, is topped with cilantro, grilled pineapple, and served with tomatillo salsa.
America’s Taco Shop has three locations around the valley, Tempe’s being the newest, which is right off the University and Rural light rail stop. Stop in from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm at any location for their dine-in only Happy Hour specials including $0.50 chips and salsa, $1.00 tacos, $2.00 Imports, and $4.00 Margaritas.
