Have a bunch of empty glass bottles you don’t know what to do with? Sounds like it must be time for a craft! Whenever I have a bunch of random objects that I can’t seem to find a use for, I try and turn this so-called ordinary “trash” into craft treasure. With glass bottles, I have made lights and all sorts of other decorations, but I think the best crafts I’ve made with bottles are decoupaged vases. With that in mind, here’s a short tutorial that’s easy to follow to create a lovely vase!
Step 1: Find a glass bottle to use for your vase. Plastic bottles can also work, but glass seems to work better because it is sturdier. Any shape or size bottle works! I like to try and use unique shapes to make a really innovative vase.
Step 2: If your bottle has some sort of a label, soak your bottle in warm water for about 10 minutes so you are able to peel the label off easily. You can also decoupage with the label still on, but sometimes it just makes for a cleaner look.
Step 3: Decide what type of paper you would like to use in your decoupage creation. Mainly, I’ve used tissue paper and magazines for these vases, but really any type of paper you want works, and you can also incorporate different types together in one vase.
Step 4: Cut or tear your choice of paper into strips or shapes. For my vases, I usually choose to rip my paper into random shapes for a more abstract look, but depending on how you want your vase to look, you may want a more ordered, patterned appearance by using cut strips.
Step 5: Pick up a paper shape or strip and using a paint brush, paint a thin layer of glue (Mod Podge or whatever type of decoupaging glue you want to use) on the paper. Once this paper shape or strip is placed on your bottle, cover it with another layer of glue.
Step 6: Continue to do this until the entire bottle is completely covered.
Step 7: Once the bottle is covered, paint another layer of glue on the entire bottle. Since you have been painting the glue on continuously, I usually choose to do just this extra coat, but you can always coat the bottle as many times as you want.
Step 8: Once the last layer of glue is dry, spray your creation with a high-gloss spray for a more finished, shiny look.
Once dry, your vase is done and ready for flowers! Even paper flowers look magical in this vase.
