As I love to make collages and create mixed media designs, the day I found out what decoupage was felt like a spiritual experience.  Perhaps, even similar to finding God.  It basically took all of my collages and other crafts to a whole other level that I never even knew possible.

For those of you who don’t know, the art of decoupaging essentially consists of taking pieces of paper and sticking them to an object by covering them with about three layers of a glue varnish. Decoupaging allows the various layers of a collage to almost flow together.  The types of paper you can use are anything from tissue paper to pieces of magazines to scrapbook paper.  The lighter the material, the easier they all can blend together into one medium!  As for the type of glue to use, my favorite is Mod Podge.  This type of glue comes in all different styles. The glossy Mod Podge is the best in my opinion because it gives the collage a great shine!  Royal Coat Decoupage Finish is also a great decoupaging glue to use.  After your multiple coats are dry, spray your creation with a high-gloss spray for a polished finish. So, just glue on your materials, use a brush to paint on your glue varnish, spray with your high-gloss finishing spray, and you’re done! Simple as that!

What types of objects can you decoupage? This is the best part, because essentially anything is decoupage-able. I usually choose to decoupage on a smaller scale- making mundane bottles into ornate vases or making awesome collages on canvas or pieces of cardboard. But, you can also decoupage plastic, glass, metal, and wood. Some individuals even go as far as to decoupage furniture, creating one-of-a-kind pieces for your home. The main thing is to just make sure that your decoupaged items don’t get wet or otherwise your creation will not hold together as well.

Besides making collages, another great craft to do with decoupage is creating unique bracelets with wooden bangles and wooden beads. In high school, I sold these bracelets online and in other places as well. These days though, my decoupaged items serve as the best gifts I can give my friends, Try decoupaging out for yourself and watch as you craft amazing, one-of-a-kind creations right before your eyes!
