Well, we’re back!
Recap: Anne Hathaway and Tom Hardy have been cast in the new Batman film to play the main villains, so who better than a comic book nerd to judge them? Last time (about Anne Hathaway) can be found HERE.
Ho-lee (swear word). Anybody who looks at that picture and thinks that Tom Hardy can’t play a beefed up lunatic that can break Christian Bale needs to get their head checked. I feel like that picture wants to beat me up. Yeesh.
You might know Hardy from "Inception" (the only guy with a British accent) or from "RocknRolla" (Handsome Bob, the gay one). Other than that, he appeared in a movie called "Bronson," which I’ve heard a lot of good things about.
Aside from that absolutely terrifying picture, I don’t know how to really feel about Hardy. He’s a solid actor, but I just don’t know. He still needs to beef up to be the Venom-(steroid stand-in)-addicted Bane.
If you remember Bane from "Batman & Robin," don’t worry. It really shouldn’t be like that. It should be much more like the '80s back-breaking Bane that got famous. At least comic famous…
The only issue that has come up is that Bane is supposed to be Spanish. The obviously-not-Spanish Hardy is kinda a strange problem. They’re clearly going to adapt his origin around the fact that he’s not Spanish, but once that picks up steam, it could become a PR nightmare.
Also, there’s the fact that Bane’s main storyline was that he broke Batman’s back. This led to the use of Azrael as the new grittier Batman who kinda went crazy before Bruce Wayne took his crown back.
That story cannot be done in a film. Not even in a Nolan 2+ hour piece. It’s just not going to work. I see Hathaway being the main villain of the film and then Hardy taking the Two-Face role, shoehorned in for effect and a quick pay-off (which would be just as hugely disappointing to me, but I’ll get into that later…)
Overall, I approve of the castings. They work in the short term. Get me some on-set pictures or Twitpics or whatever! Hell, just get filming started. Seriously. Do it.
