ASU football's Weber, Brooks earn Pac-10 honors

Following ASU’s Territorial Cup victory last Thursday, senior place kicker Thomas Weber and junior defensive end James Brooks garnered Pac-10 Players of the Week honors.

The conference announced the awards Monday, marking the second straight week that two ASU players were selected for Pac-10 honors. Last week, the award was given to sophomores quarterback Brock Osweiler and kick returner Jamal Miles.

Weber, playing in his final game for ASU, earned the award for special teams after going 5-for-5 kicking field goals, including a 52-yard kick, the second-longest of his ASU career.

One of Weber’s field goals, a 40-yarder, helped extend the annual rivalry game with UA to a second overtime.

Brooks received the conference's defensive honors after twice saving the Sun Devils in Tucson. With the game tied following a UA touchdown and just 27 seconds left in regulation, Brooks blocked Wildcat junior kicker Alex Zendejas’ extra point attempt, sending the game to overtime.

As the Wildcats tried to force a third overtime, Brooks again got his hand on a Zendejas kick, this time to preserve that ASU lead and a 30-29 victory. Brooks also had three tackles and a sack in the game.

Weber and Brooks made five players in all this season to earn Player of the Week honors. Freshman defensive end Junior Onyeali won the award after ASU’s Oct. 30 victory over Washington State.
