Freshman Onyeali named Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of Year

ASU freshman defensive end Junior Onyeali on Tuesday was named the Pac-10 Conference's Defensive Freshman of the Year.

Onyeali's award makes it two straight years that ASU has won the award. Sophomore linebacker Vontaze Burfict won the award last season. This season, Burfict was named to the Pac-10's Second Team after recording 90 tackles and 8.5 sacks.

ASU did get one player on the conference's First Team, as junior cornerback Omar Bolden was selected. Bolden led ASU with three interceptions. Bolden was also selected to the Second Team All-Pac-10 as a kickoff return specialist.

A number of other Sun Devils received All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention: junior center Garth Gerhart, junior defensive tackle Lawrence Guy, senior punter Trevor Hankins, junior defensive end Jamaar Jarrett, junior linebacker Brandon Magee, sophomore running back Cameron Marshall, sophomore punt returner Jamal Miles and senior wide receiver Kerry Taylor.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year and Oregon's Chip Kelly was named conference Coach of the Year.
