ASU soccer, volleyball victorious to start weekend


ASU's showdown with USC in Los Angeles on Saturday may be the marquee matchup of the weekend, but Friday brought plenty of important contests in Tempe.

Having not a won a game in two weekends and looking to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament, the ASU women's soccer team came out firing against USC on Friday night. With goals from seniors Karin Volpe and Alexandra Elston and freshman Josie Graybeal, the Sun Devils posted a 3-0 win.

With the win, the team may have punched their ticket to the postseason.

Volleyball

The ASU women's volleyball team had a big night of its own, sweeping Oregon State 3-0 to earn a season sweep and improve to 11-13 overall and 5-6 in the Pac-10.

Senior outside hitter Sarah Reaves led the Sun Devils with 18 kills.

Swimming

The ASU men's swim team opened its home schedule Friday night as well, but dropped the meet to Air Force.

Freshman Hayden Thomas won the 500 freestyle in 4:41.21 while freshman Karl Boscacci followed close behind with a second place finish.

Air Force won 13 of 14 events on the day, improving to 7-1 while the Sun Devils dropped to 0-2.

Tennis

The ASU women's tennis team opened the Thunderbird Invitational on Friday and impressed in its first home tournament of the season.

Freshman Jacqueline Cako and senior Kelcy McKenna both reached the quarterfinals, advancing to Saturday's play.

The Sun Devils went undefeated in doubles play, winning all four of their matches.
