Boo to a bumbling Brewer. The governor’s opening statement in a debate Wednesday night shows that if most politicians have a silver tongue, she has one of lead. It was painful to watch her opening statement at the gubernatorial debate, and even more so when that clip hit the national news Thursday. Long pauses, the phrase “have did,” and her sheepish smile plagued her first impression in the debate, where she gave vague reasons to check her name in November. The video of this “speech” has gone viral and probably won’t affect the popular governor’s favorable chances at winning the race. While there’s clearly such a thing as a bad speech, there’s no such thing as bad press.

Bravo to Labor Day. The seven-day grace period for summer idleness is officially over. Not only does the week leading up to Labor Day mean the beginning of football season, but also a well-deserved break from expectation. Some may party, some may study and some may grab some double pay this Monday, but all will agree the extra 24 hours are a great relief from the daily grind on campus.

Boo to the oil platform exploding off the Louisiana coast Thursday morning. Mariner Energy owns the platform that exploded only 200 miles west of the massive British Petroleum spill site. Although oil and water separate, the gulf issue seems to be one vicious circle of muck. The U.S. is trying to pass legislation that will limit the amount of oil being drilled by British Petroleum, yet BP is insisting that barring its drilling will make it unable to cover the cost of fixing-up the Gulf of Mexico. This oil sheen spreading in the Gulf is anything but welcome.

Bravo to the Apple iTunes social networking addition, Ping. It’s like a musical Facebook-last.fm lovechild, and the newest outlet for narcissistic and sweet music lovers. It’s name is sure to cause confusion with Microsoft’s search engine Bing, or even Southwest Airlines’ online service Ding, but it provides a nice leap forward for iTunes. Highlights of the network, accessible through iTunes 10, include concert listings and status updates from artists and friends you choose to follow and share songs with. Hopefully this doesn’t mean the continual downfall of Facebook, as many new specialized networking sites begin to pop-up.

Boo to all the unsold football season tickets this far into the semester. The available empty seats will only serve as a reminder of two forgettable seasons in ASU football history. It was only two years ago when student tickets for football and basketball were selling quicker than tickets to a Lady Gaga show. Back then it was “buy in July” or miss out entirely. As of Tuesday, season tickets were still being sold — a solemn reminder of bowl-less seasons.
