An ASU student and Sigma Nu fraternity member was arrested Thursday on suspicion of aggravated assault after reportedly stabbing another student with a box cutter twice at the Sigma Nu fraternity house.
The 3 a.m. Alpha Drive incident is under investigation by the ASU Police Department and the University, and the fraternity’s national chapter also plans to launch an investigation.
Fred Dobry, Sigma Nu’s national director of risk reduction, said the victim, whose name is not being released by the fraternity or ASU Police, is doing well after undergoing surgery at a local hospital.
“Our highest priority remains the well-being of the injured student,” Dorby said. “He is recovering and doing well. Our thoughts and prayers go to their family.”
The suspected assailant in the incident is sociology senior Samson Fivey, ASU Police Department spokesman Cmdr. Jim Hardina said. The victim is also a member of Sigma Nu.
“The victim and other subjects … decided they were going to throw Fivey into the swimming pool [on Alpha Drive],” Hardina said. “Fivey told them he had a box cutter and would stab anyone that tried to throw him into the pool.”
Fivey stabbed the victim twice, he said, and then other residents at the house took the victim to the hospital. Hardina said Fivey had been drinking.
ASU Police subsequently arrested Fivey on suspicion of aggravated assault.
Sigma Nu’s national chapter will investigate the incident when the ASU Police Department has finished its investigation, Dorby said.
“We do not want to interfere with their investigation,” he said.
The Tempe chapter house is being cooperative and the University is in close communication with the national headquarters, Dorby said.
ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said assault charges are matters that are investigated by the University and the normal process to look into the matter has been initiated.
