Tax will keep Arizona afloat

(In response to Kyle Daly’s Monday article, “Phoenix demonstrations take both sides of Proposition 100.”)

I may be in a minority here, but I plan on voting for Proposition 100. As a student, I feel the effects of Arizona’s financial situation every time I write a check for tuition or buy something at the bookstore.

Now, what gets me is how people could oppose this proposition. Apparently some people are quite all right with the way the state is operating at the moment. In my opinion, Arizona is driving itself into the ground with backhanded political posturing. This small tax increase, while not a solution to our problems, will help Arizona stay afloat and help students, not just college students mind you, get a better education.

People that protest the tax increase argue that an increase is a sign of governmental control. Instead, they think that if the citizens cut their spending and budget for the future, we will be fine.

I find this theory laughable. This theory works in theory, but not in practice.

This faith that people will just do the right thing is not a smart plan for the future. Protesters would make you think that the money will find its way back into the state somehow and that we shouldn’t have to raise taxes for that reason. They may also believe that there is a magical tree that actually grows money hidden on the lawn of Capitol Hill in Phoenix.

Arizona needs this tax increase. Vote yes on Proposition 100.
