Storm downs University power

A storm pelted the Valley Thursday causing power losses, flooding and some canceled classes across multiple ASU campuses.

Cholla Apartments, Vista Del Sol and Barrett, the Honors College complex on the Tempe campus all lost power in the late afternoon for about an hour.

Traffic signals around campus on Rural Road, Apache Boulevard and Mill Avenue were out.

McAlister Avenue between Lemon Street and Apache Boulevard experienced significant flooding, according to ASU Parking and Transit Services.

Psychology senior Brian Theer ran into trouble leaving campus Thursday afternoon.

“I was driving on Rural [Road] coming from University [Drive] and all the lights were out. Traffic was pretty bad,” he said.

ASU spokeswoman Julie Newberg said the ASU Police Department also temporarily lost power and began using back up generators.

Sam Winstead, an aircraft maintenance technology senior at the Polytechnic campus, said the outages reached the campus around 4:30 p.m.

“I was in class, the wind was blowing hard and then everything just kicked out,” he said. “Emergency generators turned on. Not much to do sitting in the pitch dark. After 20 minutes the teacher canceled class.”

Luckily, Winstead said, all the students in his class had flashlights, a requirement for AMT students to carry.

“Class is on for tomorrow,” he said. “Until further notice.”
